Pasadena's nonprofit cat café has placed more than 500 cats in homes since opening in 2021, and on Friday, July 31, Tail Town is throwing itself a birthday party at 1780 E. Washington Blvd.

The two-hour celebration runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and includes cupcakes, drinks, and what the organization calls an "Unwrapping-Palooza," where the resident cats tear into gifts brought by guests from the café's Amazon wish list, according to Colorado Boulevard. Admission is $25 per person, open to ages 6 and up, and reservations are required through tailtowncats.com.

Tail Town operates as a registered 501(c)(3) that started as a family-run operation and now depends on volunteers and community support, according to Pasadena Now. The café partners with Kitten Rescue of Los Angeles to house 30 to 40 adoption-ready cats in a roughly 2,000-square-foot lounge where the animals roam cage-free. Visits are capped at 20 guests at a time so the cats aren't overwhelmed.

On its birthday bash event page, the organization said it is marking five years of finding homes for cats and connecting guests with community. The Friday party caps a broader birthday month at Tail Town that also included a "Slumber PAWrty" overnight event and a "Meow & Paint" painting class.

The café's stated mission focuses on pulling cats from high-kill shelters, off the streets, and away from neglect, then preparing adopters for long-term commitment rather than impulse decisions. Outside food, treats, and toys are not permitted inside the lounge because the resident cats follow a specific diet, and no outside animals are allowed.

The building is single-level and wheelchair accessible. Street parking on the south side of East Washington Boulevard is limited; surrounding streets tend to be easier, according to Pasadena Now.

Beyond the birthday bash, Tail Town hosts afterhours programming on Fridays that has included painting classes, pilates, and trivia nights. Regular visiting hours are Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lobby adoptions with Kitten Rescue take place Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.
