The Rose Bowl will be the center of the soccer world in two years, and the Pasadena neighborhood surrounding it is starting to plan accordingly.
Pasadena's Northwest Commission formally adopted preparedness for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games as a yearlong strategic priority, placing the item on its agenda Wednesday, July 8, 2026, according to Pasadena Now. The commission, a city panel overseeing planning and design for northwest Pasadena, will track Olympic-related impacts on the neighborhood throughout its planning cycle, though specific action items have not been made public.
The reason is straightforward. The Rose Bowl will host the gold medal semifinals and finals for both the men's and women's Olympic soccer tournaments at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, LA28 confirmed. The men's gold medal match is set for Friday, July 28, 2028, and the women's final follows on Saturday, July 29, 2028.
A venue unlike any other
The Rose Bowl last hosted Olympic soccer in 1984, when France defeated Brazil 2-0 before 101,799 spectators. That crowd set a U.S. soccer attendance record that stood for three decades. The 2028 assignment makes the Rose Bowl one of only two venues in the world, alongside the LA Memorial Coliseum, to host events at three Olympic Games (1932, 1984, and 2028).
No other stadium on the planet has hosted the men's Olympic soccer final, the men's FIFA World Cup final (1994), and the women's FIFA World Cup final (1999).
Historic format
LA28's soccer tournament will mark a first: 16 women's teams will compete versus 12 men's, making it the first Olympic Games where women's squads outnumber men's in soccer. Group stage and knockout matches will be played across six U.S. cities before teams converge on Pasadena for the finals, according to LA28 and Soccer United Marketing, MLS's commercial arm.
Tickets and volunteers
More than 4 million tickets were claimed during LA28's first release, with 95% priced below $100, according to Pasadena Weekly. A second ticket drop runs Monday, August 10 through August 20, 2026. Fans must register through the LA28 Ticket Draw by Tuesday, July 22, 2026.
Volunteer applications open Tuesday, July 14, 2026. LA28 is seeking 60,000 volunteers for the Games.
What's next
The Northwest Commission's strategic plan puts the panel on record as a neighborhood watchdog for Olympic impacts over the next two years. Construction is visible at the Rose Bowl, where the stadium posted photos of ongoing work in late April 2026, though it's unclear whether the project is Olympic-related. The men's and women's gold medal matches at the Rose Bowl are scheduled for July 28-29, 2028.
