Pasadena High's girls varsity volleyball team swept crosstown rival John Muir in three sets on Thursday, Sept. 10, winning 25-10, 25-14 and 25-8.

The Bulldogs handled all three sets at home, according to Muir Mustangs Media, the student-run account covering Mustangs athletics. Muir traveled to Pasadena High as part of what the account described as an all-road season for the Mustangs' volleyball program.

The loss dropped Muir to 1-2. Pasadena High's season record was not available.

Two days after the breakthrough

The result was a sharp reversal for a Muir squad riding a wave of energy. On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Mustangs swept Dymally High School of Los Angeles 25-23, 25-12, 25-21 on the road. That win, Muir Mustangs Media wrote, was the program's first victory since Sept. 26, 2024, ending a year-long winless stretch.

The Dymally match had been competitive. Muir needed to grind through a 25-23 first set before pulling away. Against Pasadena High two days later, the Mustangs never found that same footing. The Bulldogs won the opener 25-10, took the second set 25-14 and closed out the match 25-8 in the third.

PHS-Muir rivalry beyond the court

The two schools' rivalry stretches across every sport. The 79th annual Turkey Tussle football game is set for Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at Rose Bowl Stadium, according to Altadena Now. The Victory Bell, the rivalry's official trophy since 1955, sits with Muir after the Mustangs won the 78th edition 28-20.

Muir (1-2) faces Burbank on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Pasadena High's next opponent and date had not been announced as of Friday, Sept. 11.
