Pasadena Village is pairing up with the SGV LGBTQ Center for two free events next week to connect LGBTQ+ older adults and their allies in the San Gabriel Valley.
The back-to-back gatherings, a documentary screening on Friday, Aug. 14, and a senior coffee chat on Saturday, Aug. 15, will take place at Flintridge Center, 236 W. Mountain St. in Pasadena, the same building that houses Pasadena Village's offices, according to Colorado Boulevard.
The Friday evening event, billed as LGBTQ+ Movie and Mocktail Night, runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Suite 117. Attendees will watch "Will & Harper," the 2024 documentary in which actor Will Ferrell and former "Saturday Night Live" head writer Harper Steele take a 17-day road trip across the country as Steele navigates life after her gender transition. The film won a Peabody Award in May 2025, earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Documentary and holds a 99% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is streaming on Netflix.
Allies are welcome.
Saturday's Senior Coffee Chat, co-hosted with the SGV LGBTQ Center, runs from 10 a.m. to noon in Suite 115. The gathering is open to adults 50 and older looking to build connection with LGBTQ+ seniors and their peers.

Why it matters
The events come as LGBTQ+ gathering spaces shrink nationwide. A July 2026 Pasadena Star-News report on a new LA County initiative cited studies showing such spaces declined more than 41% between 2002 and 2019. LGBTQ+ seniors are twice as likely to live alone compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers, and in the San Gabriel Valley many have lived closeted lives due to pressures from conservative communities, coming out late, and becoming increasingly isolated.
"People need to be together in an unstructured space where you are not sitting in a circle forced to tell your life story," researcher Christensen told the Pasadena Star-News on July 31. "That's worse if you are queer. You want places where someone can drop in and feel comfortable."
The SGV LGBTQ Center, based in El Monte, already holds a seniors meetup on the third Saturday of each month, rotating between Pasadena, Arcadia and El Monte. The Aug. 15 coffee chat at Flintridge Center brings that programming directly into Pasadena Village's home turf.
