The first 20 Pasadena households to register and show up at a free composting workshop Saturday, July 25, will walk out with a backyard compost bin.
The City of Pasadena's Public Works Department and the Pasadena Public Library are co-hosting the Backyard Composting Workshop at 1 p.m. at the Lamanda Park Branch Library, 140 S. Altadena Drive. The introductory session will cover how to set up a bin, which materials can be composted, and how to maintain the right balance for effective composting, according to the city's announcement published July 23.
The free bins measure 33 by 33 inches when fully assembled and collapse to 33 by 18 inches for transport home. One bin per household. Recipients must be Pasadena residents.

Why it matters
California's SB 1383, which took effect in 2022, requires cities to divert organic waste from landfills. The workshop fits into Pasadena's broader effort to help residents handle food scraps at home rather than sending them to the curb.
